Primacoustic Nimbus (black)


The Primacoustic Nimbus is a high-performance ceiling cloud designed 
to hang from the ceiling and capture ambient reverberation by absorbing sound 
as it hits the front face of the panel while trapping powerful reflections in behind as 
they echo off the ceiling.

The Nimbus is made from 2" thick, high-density 6lb per cubic foot glass wool that is fully encapsulated with micromesh and treated with resin hardened edges. The acoustic panel is then covered in an attractive yet rugged fabric coating that is easy to clean. Installation is easy using the included screw-in Cloud Anchors™, ceiling hooks and hanging wire. As with all Broadway panels, the Nimbus has been fire tested to meet ASTM-E84 and Can/UL-S102 to achieve the stringent Class-A/1 designation for safe use in public spaces. Acoustic testing has been undertaken at Riverbank Labs to ensure the Nimbus delivers effective absorption throughout the critical voice range.

Three architecturally neutral colors make installation easy and unobtrusive even in the most lavish surroundings. Once in place, the Nimbus will reduce reverb and echo lowering ambient noise. This significantly improves communication while reducing stress caused by ear-fatigue. This makes the Nimbus an effective solution for restaurants, cafeterias, classrooms, lobbies, libraries, call centers and airports where the reverberant field is so prominent that it makes conversation difficult. For the studio, the Nimbus provides an effective, yet more affordable alternative to the Stratus.

Science Of The Acoustic Cloud
The Nimbus is in many ways the ideal acoustical device. It absorbs energy via the front panel, it absorbs energy from the rear side, it easily mounts from the ceiling where it is out of the way of windows, doors and art, and it quietly goes about its job reducing stress in the workplace and improving intelligibility for those that wish to communicate.

Improving Intelligibility
The term ‘intelligibility’ refers to one’s ability to understand or comprehend what is being said in a given room. For instance, everyone knows how horrible it is to go to a restaurant that is so ‘loud’ that it makes having a conversation impossible. The reason for this is simple: as more and more people converse, the hard surfaces of the walls, glass and tables reflect the energy back into the room where it echoes without any means of escape. Outside, sound is lost into space as there are no reflective boundaries. In the restaurant, as the ambient sound level increases, people naturally speak louder in order to be heard above the din. The louder we yell, the worse it gets. And if you are like me, we simply do not go back.

But this problem is not limited to restaurants. Hotel lobbies, airports, gymnasiums, classrooms… all of these spaces suffer from the same problems. And then when announcements from the PA are dispatched, they are impossible to understand. The solution is simple: introduce some form of absorption into the space.

Basic Acoustics
The science built into the Nimbus is simple: sound - in the form of vibrations – passes through the acoustically transparent fabric and penetrates fine glass wool filaments causing them to vibrate. This is known as a thermo-dynamic transfer whereby acoustic energy is transformed into heat.

The absorption performance of the two inch thick Nimbus is remarkable when compared to two inch urathane foam. Unlike foam panels that have virtually no effect in the lower mid range where the human voice tends to sound "boomy" the Nimbus delivers 90% efficiency.

The added benefits of suspending the Nimbus to create a an air space behind the panel are remarkable. With the Nimbus suspended a few inches below the ceiling the sound not only penetrates the front face of the cloud, but as sound echoes off the room walls, some of it will be absorbed by the back side too. This simple trick of exposing more surface area can double the performance of an acoustic cloud like the Nimbus.

The overall low frequency absorption performance is further augmented by the air-space behind the panel. The air space behind panel acts like a bass trap, effectively increasing the low frequency absorption. In fact if you create a 12" (30cm) air space behind the Nimbus, you will likely enjoy as much as an extra octave of low frequency absorption for free. Free is always good!

The Acoustic Bell Curve
For the most part, the science of acoustics is really based on good old fashioned common sense. And although this may seem obvious, you need to start with the notion that the more acoustic panels you put in your room, the more energy you will absorb. This in itself makes solving the problem easy: Put a single panel up in a gymnasium and nothing will happen. Put a million panels up and you will no longer have any echo.


How To Mount The Nimbus
The Nimbus comes complete with Cloud Anchors™, hanging wire and special butterfly ceiling anchors that open to secure the hanging hardware when the eye-screw is inserted. Mounting is a simple matter of deciding where you want the Nimbus to be, following the simple installation instructions and enjoying the immediate results!


Installation Reference:
  • Restaurant: Usually above the tables. You can also combine with Accent panels to create artistic design.
  • Hotel Lobby: High up in the ceiling. Above the check-in counter is advantageous.
  • Classroom: Spread around the room. Particularly useful when placed about 3 feet (1 meter) away from the wall.
  • Music Room: Above the drum kit and the perimeter about 3 feet (1 meter) away from the walls.
  • Recording Studio: Used as a recording cloud, usually the width of the work area about the mix position.
  • Airport: Up high out of the way. Nimbus work well in all areas with excessive reverberation.
  • Meeting Room: Spread around the room.
  • Boardroom: Usually above the boardroom table.
  • Call Center: Spread around the room above calling team.
  • Office Center: Spread around the room.
  • Gymnasium: The Nimbus is not suited for gymnasiums. The design is simply too easy a target for kids.
  • Health Club: Spread around the room. Extra in weight room and spin class where more noise is generated.
  • Dance Teaching: Spread around the room. Particularly useful when placed about three feet (1 meter) away from the wall.
  • Night Club: Spread around the room. Extra above dance floor if possible.
  • Bottling Plant: Spread panels throughout. Add extra above bottle sorting trays where noise is increased. Add panels to walls.
  • Printing Press: Create lid on top of printer. Add panels above noisy areas and panels to walls.

Product Specifications:
The Primacoustic Nimbus is an easy to install acoustic cloud designed to be suspended over an area where a reduction in sound level is desired.

Test data shows the Nimbus cloud to be highly effective at absorbing sound throughout the vocal bandwidth from 100Hz and up. Several Nimbus clouds may be installed in an array to remove excessive echo and reverberation in large spaces.

The Nimbus consists of a Broadway high denstity glass wool panel that is effective at absorbing sound from 100Hz and up. It features hardened square edges to create clean architectural lines when installed and the durable fabric face is available in three neutral colors that work in virtually any room decor.

The included hardware set contains everything needed for most installations. Drywall anchors can be used for hollow ceiling or the eye screws may be directly fastened to a ceiling with a solid backing. Suspending the cloud is as simple as a twist of the wrist. The clever Rotofast anchor twists into the back of the high density glass wool panel and is rated at 45lbs pull-out strength. A generous amount of suspension tie wire is included. Everything you need is in the box.
